Gluten-free Halloween events in PDX (2016)

5dc2f52ad6f6aed2I poached this from an email from Tracy Lehto of Generation GF. Generation GF is the kids arm of GIG, the national Gluten Intolerance Group (our local chapter is run by Dr. Lisa Shaver)—contact info below.

“We are lucky to live in a community with many gluten-free bakeries that help us enjoy the holidays in Portland with fabulous GF treats! I did a quick scan and here is what I found happening for Halloween.

Gluten-free GEM Bakery Pop-up Shop, Saturday, Oct 29th 10am-2pm at Anthropologie in the Pearl District – Halloween and other treats.

Liberated Baking Halloween Carnival, Saturday, Oct 29th, 5pm – For kids 2-12 with allergies or celiac disease! A safe Halloween activity. They have games, prizes, and treats! Wear your Halloween costume! $5 per child. We went last year and will be attending this year also because it was tons of fun!

Cute vegan Halloween goodies at Petunias’.

Pumpkin Soy Soft-serve at Back to Eden.

Of course, you are likely to find some Halloween themed treats at the other GF bakeries including Kyra’s, Tula, and New Cascadia.

It’s not too early to think about Thanksgiving and most of these PDX bakeries offer Thanksgiving items as well. New Cascadia does a tasting of their Thanksgiving goods on Wednesday Nov 9th and Nov 16th  at 10am. Totally worth checking out, its like a mini Thanksgiving!

Have a safe and gluten-free Halloween!

My lovely friend Kyra Bussanich, owner of Kyra’s Bake Shop in Lake Oswego just WON another cupcake wars. This one was called the “Ultimate Showdown Challenge” because it was all bakers who have won before. Go get some (and drop a few off at my office if you’re driving by…) 🙂

Kyra is on Cupcake Wars Again! The Showdown.

FullSizeRenderKyra Bussanich of Kyra’s Bake Shop is once again competing on an all-new Cupcake Wars. The Food Network describes this as the “Ultimate Showdown – Get ready for a cupcakebattle royale as four of the best Cupcake Wars bakers of all time face off in a one-of-a-kind baking adventure” – trying to become the ONLY 4-time winner of that competition – and still the only Gluten-free winner ever, competing against “regular” bakers. First episode – next Monday, May 2 – click here for showing deets.

I got a chance to catch up with her and ask a few questions. I can’t wait for the show!!

Q: We hear that you’re going to be on Cupcake Wars once again. What made you decide to go back?

A: I am grateful to Cupcake Wars for pushing our creative boundaries. Each time we compete on the show, it spurs us to think beyond flavor combinations we’ve ever attempted before, and I just love what happened when all the barriers come down and we can dream big!

Q: How many times have you been on the show? How many times have you won?

A: This will be our 6th appearance. Out of our previous 5 appearances, we’ve won 3 times, and been the runners up twice. NO ONE has won more than 3 times, so we will be attempting to break the record on Monday May 2nd.

Q: Are you baking all gluten-free? Is it a gluten-free episode?

A: I AM baking all gluten-free, and competing against “regular” bakers, just like the previous episodes. However, this time, all of us have won Cupcake Wars in the past, so we are all well-experienced, which ups the competition.

Q: Can you give us a hint as to how you did?

A: Ahh, you’ll just have to tune in and watch! 😉
